The Minnesota Real Estate Journal 2021 Awards ceremony will be held Thursday evening, July 29, at The Depot in Minneapolis. The City of Watkins will be represented by members of the Watkins city council and EDA, purchasing a table with developer David Tysk, at the ceremony.
The City of Watkins and the City of Fridley are the finalists for “City of the Year,” to be presented that evening.
The criteria for City of the Year includes major projects and accomplishments in the city within the past 14 months, and grants and other supportive services provided to real estate projects within the past 14 months.
The Western View Apartments in Watkins are nearing completion. The 20-unit building plus detached garage, developed by David Tysk and his partner Scott Mann of Meeker Leased Housing LLC, was presented the project in January 2021. It is a multifamily residential rental housing facility, to be rented at market rates to house members of the local workforce.
The estimated tax value of the project will be $1,239,000. The city agreed to reimburse property taxes paid by Meeker Leased Housing, for up to $235,00 over a period of not more than 15 years. This represents the city’s portion of a 1:2 matching Workforce Housing grant through the state. Without the grant, and the assistance from the city, this project likely would not have begun. And this is the kind of support that earned the City of Watkins a spot as one of the top two cities in Minnesota in 2021, as determined by Minnesota Real Estate Journal.
Roseville and Lakeville were finalists last year for City of the Year, with Roseville taking home the honors.
