We are already approaching the mid-point of the month of October. Most areas have seen the normal amount of rainfall for the entire month at this point.
On Saturday into Sunday much of the region saw some pretty good rainfall amounts. The bulk of the rain fell on Saturday night as a strong system moved out of the Dakotas. Some severe weather was associated with the system. Most of the region saw between 1-4 inches of rain.
Halloway, in Swift County, reported 4.50 inches of rain from this event. Morris picked up 2.70 inches, Alexandria reported 2.25 inches, while Sauk Centre had 1.90 inches of rain.
Some other amounts around the state were: Elbow Lake 2.02 inches, Brainerd 1.45 inches, Battle Lake 1.42 inches, Brainerd and Motley 1.17 inches, Nisswa 1.16 inches, Pillager 1.11 inches, Kimball and Paynesville .40 inches, and Montevideo .25 inches.
Another powerful system is expected to move out of the Rockies and into the Central Plains and Upper Midwest Tuesday night into Wednesday. This will likely bring showers and some isolated thunderstorms to Minnesota. Some heavy rainfall is expected once again to add to our October rainfall totals. The winds will also be quite strong with gusts to 40 mph or more possible.
Expect much drier weather to follow for the upcoming weekend with highs near average.
Weather history: On this date in 1820 records show that “a snowstorm at Ft. Snelling dumps 11 inches” of snow.
Weather facts: Deepening in regards to the weather is a “decrease in the central pressure of a cyclonic or low pressure system.”
