Serbus is state’s third-place Scout of the Year

Back in May, it was announced that Eagle Scout William Serbus received third place in the State of Minnesota for Scout of the Year. The award is sponsored by the V.F.W. (Veterans of Foreign Wars) each year.

In an extensive process, applications begin at the local V.F.W. level and are passed up to the State level as merited. The award is only open to Eagle Scouts, Girl Scout Gold Award recipients, Venture Summit Award recipients, or Sea Scout Quartermasters, but only three scholarships in total are awarded. Applicants are assessed based on their scouting records, community service, and five letters of recommendation.

The third-place award earned Serbus a $1,000 national scholarship.

Although announced in May, Serbus was presented with his actual certificate at the Wat-Kim-Valley V.F.W. July meeting.

Serbus will be a senior at Kimball Area High School this year. His parents are Carly and Matt Serbus; grandparents are Frank and Cathy Schiefelbein III, and Dotte and the late Dennis Serbus; and his great-grandparents are Frosty and the late Frank Schiefelbein Jr., all of Kimball.
