Eagle girls overcome by Royals, lose lead to Bulldogs

The Eagles girls’ basketball team hit the road for a test versus the undefeated 13-0 -Royalton Royals. The Eagles trailed by -single digits at halftime, at 25-34, but could not cover that deficit in an eventual 71-52 loss Tuesday, Jan. 21 – the team’s third straight defeat.

The Eagles shot 33% from the floor, compared to 40% for the Royals. For the game, the Eagles also lost the turnover battle, committing 18 – eight more than the Royals.

Offensively, Lily Schultz led the Eagles with 15 points on 58% shooting (7 of 12). Grace Brovold scored 13 points and Addy Stommes chipped in eight points to also pace the Eagles.

Paynesville

The Eagles girls’ basketball team jumped out to a 26-16 halftime lead on the road versus the Paynesville Area Bulldogs. The Eagles couldn’t hang on to that lead and fell by a narrow 52-50 final in section and conference action on Friday, Jan. 24. 

For the game, the Eagles shot 33% from the floor and just 40% (4 of 10) at the charity stripe. 

Defensively, the Eagles did hold the Bulldogs to just 31% shooting. The Bulldogs also shot just 46% (6 of 13) from the free-throw line, but found some success from three-point range shooting 35%
(8 of 23) for the game.

Ava Vanderbeek led the Eagles with a double-double performance of 16 points and 10 rebounds, along with a team-high two blocks. Grace Brovold finished with nine points and a team-high five assists, and Ellaree Anderson seven points and seven rebounds to also pace the Eagles.

With the loss, the team falls to 3-16 overall and 2-7 in the Central Minnesota Conference. 

Next action

After hitting the road to play Albany on Jan. 28, the Eagle girls return home to host Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City on Thursday, Jan. 30. The following week, the team hits the road to face -Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa on Tuesday, Feb. 4.
