Cub wrestlers routed by third-ranked Huskers

The Cubs wrestlers returned home for a test versus the third-ranked Holdingford Huskers. -Facing a Huskers team with seven wrestlers in the latest Class A individual rankings, the Cubs came away with a single individual win and a 53-4 loss on Jan. 30. 

Karson Schmidt (127) earned the team’s lone victory – a 10-1 major decision over the Huskers’ Casey Knettel.

The Cubs lost three matches by tight decisions. The first one came when Teagan VanNurden (114) dropped a 4-2 match to the Huskers’ Carson Reis (114). Mark Schiefelbein (160) dropped a 3-1 decision to the Huskers’ Teddy Auer. Capping the dual, Garret Rosenow (285) fell by a 9-6 score to the Huskers’ Kyle Fiedler. 

At 152, two ranked wrestlers faced off, in the Cubs’ Mark Schiefelbein (ranked sixth at Class A 152 pounds) and the Huskers’ Masyn Patrick (the top ranked wrestler at Class A 145 pounds). Schiefelbein fell by a 12-0 major decision.

One other Cub fell by a major decision. Jon Serbus (172) lost by a 13-0 score to the Huskers’ Parker Westbrock.   

Of the Cubs’ 11 losses in the dual, four would come via pin (107, 121, 133, and 145) and two by forfeit (189 and 215). The teams -double forfeited at 139.

Next action

The Cubs hit the road for a triangular dual event at Le Sueur-Henderson on Thursday, Feb. 6. The team caps its week with a road dual versus Eden Valley-Watkins on Friday, Feb. 7.
