St. Anne’s bazaar brings friends, neighbors together

St. Anne’s Catholic church had its annual church bazaar this past weekend. As usual, the event included games and socializing for participants young and old. Mary Mathies, a parishioner at St. Anne’s, worked for the event. She said, “My favorite part was visiting with friends. It was fun to sit down and gather with others. It is fun to converse with people who you know their names, but never get to meet.” Participants enjoyed playing the different games, which varied from ring toss to bingo. With a quick flick of the wrist, contestants tossed rings onto 2-liter pop bottles. Winners took home the soda as their prize. Using a fishing pole, children reeled in prizes from behind a curtain. As an easier game, children spun a wheel full of prizes. Wherever the wheel landed, there was a winner every time. At the cake walk stand, community members purchased numbered sticks for a quarter. A wheel was spun to see who would win the cake. Over 150 cakes were given away as prizes. “There were many people at the cake walk,” Mathies said. “Many would play until they would win. If they were persistent long enough, they would get a cake.” Bingo was offered for the more apt participants. As numbers were called, the game-players swiftly marked off their numbers and shouted off “bingo” if they won. “There were many prizes walking around,” said Mathies. Besides games and entertainment, St. Anne’s parishioner also feed their guests. Hamburgers were available outside and a pork dinner was ready indoors. The Knaus family, who are members of the church, prepared the pork for the meal. Another church-goer who is a restaurant cook prepared the rest of the meal. From potatoes and gravy to dessert, everything was covered. Church secretary Betty Adolph heard that nearly 500 people were served at the event. “This year’s attendance was better than last year,” Adolph said. All money raised at the event will go to the church.
