This past weekend senior John Hanley and Junior Derek Orbeck represented the Kimball Cubs as they participated in the Minnesota State Wrestling Tournament. John Hanley, who made it to his third state tournament, met up against Aitkin’s Matt Christenson (with a 35-2 record). John was trailing by three points in the third period, but that is as close as John was going to get as Christenson added four more points after a throw late in the third period. John lost the match 10-3. Christenson lost his next match eliminating John from the tournament. At 130 Derek Orbeck, who made his first state tournament appearance, went up against Dover-Eyota’s Ryan Johnson (with a 34-2 record). It was a scoreless match up until 12 seconds left in the first period when Johnson recorded a takedown. In the second period, John chose down and reversed Derek and picked up two near-fall points. This was all that Johnson would need following a scoreless third period and the 6-0 victory. Johnson would lose his next match eliminating Derek from the tournament.
