Sept. 1-2, Hailey Gruber of Richmond competed in the World Ploughing Competition in Kirchentellinsfurt, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Not only was she one of only two competitors, but at age 16 she was the youngest too. Hailey was her father Gene’s coach at Worlds in Kenya in December 2017. Hailey’s father, uncle and grandfather have competed several times in World ploughing competitions, and Hailey began at age 2, sitting with her dad on the tractor.
The Watkins Sportsmen’s Club annual picnic was Sept 2 at Clear Lake Sportsman’s Park.
Sunday, Sept. 2, the Kimball Express played two games at the State baseball tournament. After beating New Prague in their home ball park Sept. 1, the Express beat the Buckman Billygoats. That evening, Kimball faced Plato, fresh off a 6-1 win over Hutchinson. The Plato Blue Jays defeated the Express, 12-5, and went on to become the new State Champions. The Express finished in third place this year, wearing their 2017 Championship uniforms.
Eden Valley-Watkins Schools resumed after the summer break Sept. 4 with eight new staff members. Open house was held Aug. 29.
The Kimball Class of 1952 held a reunion Sept 6 at Triple R Grill & Bar in Kimball.
Members of the Kimball Legion Auxiliary attended Legionville Camp-O-Ree in Brainerd Sept. 6-9.

The Kimball Golf Club turned 50 years old this summer. The club held a two-day golf tournament, Sept. 8-9, but the anniversary went otherwise unnoticed.
The Church of St. Anthony fall festival was held in Watkins Sept. 9. The featured attraction was the Chainsaw Man, Mark Kurtz.
Kimball Christian Church hosted a pig roast and Sweetheart Revival concert Sept. 9.
Lundeen Bros. Ford in Annandale celebrated their 98th anniversary as a Ford dealer, and 101 years in business, Sept. 10-15 with lunch, prizes, and special deals.
The Kimball “Old Coots” met Sept. 11 at Triple R Grill & Bar in Kimball. They usually meet every six months.
Plans were revealed at the Sept. 12 Eden Valley City Council meeting that a splash pad has been added to plans for the new Friederichs Park project under way in the southwest corner of town. The city had received a DNR grant to help fund the project, as well as donations from local organizations. At the same meeting, Nicole Pilarski was introduced as the new clerk, replacing Mona Haag so she could retire; this was Pilarski’s only council meeting, though, as she was back in Kimball Oct. 2.

Kimball’s ECFE held a “big truck and tractor” fall event Sept. 15, on a hot Saturday morning. Young children and their parents got to check out ECFE along with a tractor, truck, bus, and police squad car.
The 6th District American Legion Auxiliary Junior Fun Day was Sept. 15 at the Brainerd Legion. Girls from the Kimball Legion participated. Members of the Kimball Legion Auxiliary attended the 100th national convention of the Legion Auxiliary in August, in Minneapolis.
St. Wendelin’s Parish in Luxemburg hosted a “back to school” breakfast Sept. 16.
The Eden Valley Area Library annual fundraiser dinner was Sept. 16 at Dino’s Eden Lakeside Club.
St. Anne’s Fall Festival was held Sept. 16 at the church in Kimball with all the usual attractions including BINGO, cake walk, breakfast, burger stand, quilt raffle, and the big raffle.
Auditions were held by Eden Valley-Watkins Community Ed Sept. 17-19 for “Snoopy! The Musical” to be performed in November.
The Kimball Area Historical Society met Sept. 18 with Michael Stanley from South Africa as guest speaker. He compared education here in Kimball (where he attended in 1958-59) and in South Africa where he grew up.

Author Bob Kunkel held his first book signing event Sept. 21 at Triple R Grill & Bar. His book Walking Point: A Vietnam Memoir was released in August, published by Thunderbrook Publishing in Kimball (a.k.a. Jean Doran Matua). The event was very well attended, and it was a great kick-off for Bob’s book.
Sept. 22 was the Watkins Lions golf tournament at Kimball Golf Club. The Eden Valley American Legion Post #381 held its membership dinner Sept. 22 at Dino’s Lakeside Club in Eden Valley. A highlight of the afternoon was the presentation of 51 quilts to Legion members, part of a program to provide quilts to each of its 174 members. Vicki Peschon, Deb Hesse, and Donna Markwood made the 51 quilts since January 2018, meeting the first Saturday each month at the Eden Valley Civic Center; their labor is all volunteered, and others are always welcome to come and help! They work through Quilts of Valor Foundation, and their current project is to complete the 174 quilts within three years, and they are on-target to do so. Each quilt must be 100-percent cotton, is a pieced quilt in red-white-and-blue, and is machine quilted by Peschon. The quilts were distributed to the oldest/longest members first, and they were very appreciative.
The Valley Tractor Club held their Plow Day Sept. 22 on a field near Eden Valley. Vintage tractor owners had the opportunity to put their tractors to use by plowing up a field. About 15 tractors were there to plow up a field that was about 40 acres.
A big benefit was held Sept. 22 for Alizabeth Ludwig at the Roadside Tavern in Roscoe. Alizabeth is the youngest of five daughters of Steve and Carrie Ludwig. She was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in December 2017, and had been undergoing chemotherapy treatments at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital. Family friend Stacy Moehrle started planning the benefit as soon as she learned of the diagnosis; there also was a T-shirt fundraiser with shirts that read “I’m fighting cancer … What’s your superpower?” Alizabeth’s aunt Lisa Ludwig was co-chair for the benefit. More than 1,000 people came out to help the Ludwig family, including five Disney princesses.

KAHS Homecoming was Sept. 23-28; “Back Home” is the theme. Candidates for Homecoming king and queen were Julia Zipoy, Noah Jurek, Justine Miller, Michael Lochen, Maddi Fox, Michael Donnay, Libby Yozamp, Madaline Gustafson, Thomas Pearson, and Riley Miller. Michael Lochen and Maddi Fox were crowned 2018 Homecoming King and Queen on Sunday; they were voted on by students in grades 9-12. The rest of the week included themed dress-up days and athletic events, and ended with the Homecoming dance Friday evening.

Zion United Methodist Church in South Haven held a pancake breakfast and rummage sale Sept. 29 at the church.
The Kimball Area Friends of the Library held their fall fundraiser, Pumpkin Palooza, Sept. 29 at Willow Creek Park in Kimball. There was a pumpkin-growing contest, decorated pumpkin auction, games, music, and lots of fun. Funds raised went to the new library building project.

She competed Oct. 20 in Burnsville in the NANBF Clash of the Titans earning first in Masters 40+ in Bodybuilding, and first in Masters 40+ in Physique as well as second in Women’s Open (all ages) in both Bodybuilding and Physique.

EV-W Homecoming was Oct. 7-12 with “Rock Their Boat” as the theme (Homecoming opponent was the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted Lakers). The annual variety show and coronation kicked off the week Sunday evening in the Peps Neuman Gym. The Wat-Kim-Valley V.F.W. hosted a benefit breakfast for 11-year-old Sofia Wilson, granddaughter of Tom and Joyce Wilson of Kimball, Oct. 21 at Watkins Village Hall. Sofia was diagnosed with osteosarcoma and was undergoing chemo treatments in advance of surgery.
The annual Kingston Turkey Dinner was Oct. 21 in the Community Center.
The Kimball Area Historical Society held their annual meeting Oct. 23 at Kimball City Hall.
Oct. 24 was the Resource Training & Solutions Educational Excellence Awards program at River’s Edge in St. Cloud. Tammy Winter and Mary Ann Holdvogt from Eden Valley-Watkins and Zach Boser and Emma Hohulin of Kimball were honored.
The Section 6A cross country meet was Oct. 25. Two Eden Valley-Watkins/Kimball runners, Olivia Kuechle and Libby Yozamp, qualified for the State tournament Nov. 3. There was a send-off for them from EV-W Nov. 2 (there was no school that day at Kimball). Kuechle finished 93rd in the State tournament, and Yozamp finished 103rd.

The Kingston Legion, Auxiliary, and Junior Auxiliary hosted a Halloween party for the community Oct. 27.
The annual community Halloween Party was held Oct. 31 at St. Anthony Parish Center in Watkins. This was also Alayna Ertl’s 8th birthday party. All were encouraged to dress in costume. Toy donations were accepted to be shared with families in need over the Holidays. The free event was sponsored by Sharing Alayna Ertl’s Love LLC Foundation, a non-profit formed last year to help children and families in the area, keeping alive Alayna Ertl’s spirit of love and joy.
In October, “Monster” Mike was named to the 2019 Team USA Paralympic team. Although the next Paralympics are not until 2022, there are numerous world competitions between now and then, and Schultz will have access to the Olympic training center in Colorado.
A new chapter of Narcotics Anonymous began in October, meeting Mondays from 7-8:30 p.m. at Kimball United Methodist Church. It’s called “Highway 55 NA.”
With a target of $400,000 to apply for a matching state grant, the Kimball Library task force announced they had raised $430,701 in cash and pledges; adding in-kind donations and $51,661 in city funds, the grand total raised was $560,602. (The grant was awarded at the end of 2018, with a matching amount of $439,511.)

Nov. 6 was the general election. The $8 million referendum for Eden Valley-Watkins Schools won with a margin of 120 votes: 1085-965. “Minnesota Made Me,” a book by award-winning sportswriter Patrick C. Borzi, came out Nov. 6. The book features famous Minnesota athletes. One of the chapters is on Eden Valley’s Alvera “Peps” Neuman.
Hilltop Health Care Center in Watkins hosted a Veterans Day program Nov. 11.
A TV interview with local author Bob Kunkel aired on the Arvig cable channel program “Around the Corner” Nov. 11, Veterans Day. The interview focused on Kunkel’s book Walking Point and how writing it helped him with his PTSD. The interview was taped at Eagle’s Healing Nest in Sauk Centre.
A Veterans Day program was held Nov. 12 at Kimball Area High School to honor local veterans.
Eden Valley-Watkins schools hosted a Veterans Day program Nov. 12 in the Peps Neuman Gym.
Kimball police chief Jason Mehr submitted his resignation at the Nov. 13 Kimball City Council meeting stating, “When you’re driving down the road and don’t want to come to work anymore, it’s time to go.” His resignation was accepted, and the council voted unanimously to pay out 100 percent of his PTO. (The city arranged with the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office for supervision of the department, including two full-time officers. As of Jan. 17, 2019, no new police chief had yet been identified. Meanwhile, one of the two officers resigned in January, too; her position will not be filled immediately.) At that same meeting, the council approved installation of solar panel arrays on the rooftops of both the Kimball high school and elementary.
Following the retirement of their Public Works/Maintenance person, the South Haven City Council decided at its Nov. 13 meeting to hire two part-time people as replacement; both do the same job full-time for other cities, and they feel they can split the job between them in their off hours.
The Kimball American Legion Auxiliary Post 261 hosted a teachers’ tea Nov. 14 at the Legion Clubroom. Legion Auxiliaries around the country have been hosting teachers’ teas for nearly 100 years, celebrating education and educators.
Nov. 14 the Educational Staff Recognition event was held, sponsored by Resource Training & Solutions, at River’s Edge in St. Cloud. Tim Hartfiel and Kelly Salzl were recognized from EV-W schools, and Carolyn Schlawin and Tracy Theis were recognized from Kimball schools.
The fall musical returned to Kimball Area High School after an absence of several years. “Grease” was performed Nov. 16-17 in the KAHS cafetorium under the direction of Kenzie Traurig.
Powder Ridge started making snow early, and was set to open Nov. 17 this year (about 10 days earlier than usual). Early cold temperatures allowed them to make large amounts of snow earlier than usual.
First-graders at Kimball Elementary School held their annual Thanksgiving celebration Nov. 19. They made their own costumes, and made the applesauce that was part of their afternoon feast.
KAHS alumna Angie Hoeft performed at the Kimball Library Nov. 19, a Holiday-themed show with guitars.
Nov. 19 saw donkeys in the Kimball Area High School gym for Donkey Basketball. It was a packed house for a pork chop dinner followed by four teams competing in Donkey Basketball: Kimball Fire Dept., Kimball Businesses, Kimball Booster Clubs, Kimball school staff. The donkeys were provided by Dairyland Donkeyball who recommend waiting two years before hosting the event again. Based on the reception it got, it’s very likely that it will come back!
Local author Bob Kunkel spoke Nov. 26 at the Kimball Area Public Library to a small but attentive group. His book Walking Point: A Vietnam Memoir recounts his year in the Infantry during the Vietnam War. It has been very well received, especially by fellow veterans.
Olivia Kuechle scored her 1,000th point for the EV-W Eagles girls’ basketball team Nov. 29 against New London-Spicer; she is a junior and plays guard. Dec. 4 against Holdingford, Emma Schultz scored her 1,000th point for the team; she is a senior who plays forward. (Eagles girls’ basketball ended 2018 undefeated.)
The Kingston Lions Club celebrated their 30th anniversary at their November meeting.
The Watkins Fire Department purchased new “jaws of life” equipment (and will sell the old equipment). Because newer cars are made with much harder metals, the old-style equipment cannot cut through many of the cars on the road today. The department received a grant that helped pay for the $________ new equipment.

A retirement party was held for Eden Valley City Clerk Mona Haag Dec. 7 at the Eden Valley Community Center. Mona had worked 30 years for the city. (Cindy Anderson is her able replacement.)
Kimball’s Santa Day was Dec. 8 at Kimball City Hall. Santa arrived by fire truck to meet with kids. There was cookie decorating, coloring, and treats, and the Kimball Legion Auxiliary had their bake sale.
Dec. 8 was Santa Day in Watkins. The day started with the Lions Christmas Santa Store in the morning. “The Pirates’ Christmas Ransom” play was presented by Cardboard Art Productions, followed by prizes and then Santa, all at the Village Hall. Then the Watkins Lions Club hosted everyone for hot dogs and cocoa at the skating rink, along with horse-drawn sleigh rides.
Kingston Santa Day was Dec. 8 at the Kingston Community Center. Both Santa and Frosty the Snowman were there, and there were crafts and goodies for kids.
The Red Cross blood drive was in Watkins Dec. 11 at St. Anthony Parish Hall.
Having been elected State Senator in a special election Nov. 6, replacing Sen. Michelle Fischbach who had run unsuccessfully for Lt. Gov. with Tim Pawlenty, Sen. Jeff Howe of Rockville was sworn in Dec. 11 as Minnesota’s newest senator. Howe’s seat has the distinction of being the one that keeps Republicans one seat ahead in the Minnesota Senate. (Howe had been the Minnesota Representative for much the same area; Lisa DeMuth was elected in November to take his seat as Representative.)
The Eden Valley Citizens For Progress again hosted a Letters to Santa this year. Letters were due by Dec. 12 and the answers were available for pickup later in the month.
The 20th annual Canadian Pacific Holiday Train came through our area Dec. 12, stopping in Eden Valley for a concert with The Trews and presenting the Eden Valley Food Shelf with a check for $4,500. For a change, temperatures were mild for winter instead of the usual sub-zero blast that comes that night each year. Eden Valley hosted a Community Holiday Gathering before the train arrived, with music, soup, cookies, and hot chocolate and cider. Frosty and Santa Claus were also part of the pre-train party.
Casey Gohmann and Julia Zipoy were selected by KAHS as Triple A award winners. Mitchell Utecht and Kennedy Kleist were selected by EV-W HS for the award. The Triple A award honors the top two students at each Minnesota high school in Academics, Arts and Athletics.
Ertl Hardware Hank in Watkins celebrated their 10th anniversary with lunch and treats Dec. 14-15.
Zion United Methodist Church in South Haven held their annual Christmas cookie sale Dec. 15.
“The Spirit of Christmas” house tours Dec. 15 in Kimball helped to raise money for the new Kimball Library building. Featured homes were Steve & Sue Gohman, Ed & Rose Borman, and Dan & Tammy Konz.
A spaghetti supper benefit was held Dec. 15 for Kevin Ruprecht at Dino’s Eden Lakeside Club in Eden Valley. A spaghetti supper, silent auction, meat raffle, and live music were part of the evening. Ruprecht had been badly injured in an explosion in September.
The annual P.I.E. raffle at Kimball Elementary was held Dec. 17.
SnoDaze at KAHS was held Dec. 17-21. Each day of the week was a themed dress-up day. Friday was set aside for competitions throughout the day, ending with coronation at 2:40 p.m. Candidates were Jacob Beehler and Justine Miller, Riley Spoden and Athena Capes, Casey Gohmann and Megan Schindler, George Matua and Rebecca Binsfeld, Bree Gehrke and Olivia Schneider, Matthew Loch and Bailee Schiefelbein, Donnie Frilstad and Erica Johnson, Brandon Rosha and Cailyn Kuechle, Riley Miller and Maddi Fox, and Novalee Bechtold and Noah Young. Riley Spoden and Athena Capes were crowned 2018 SnoDaze king and queen at KAHS. (EV-W’s SnoDaze is coming up Jan. 28-Feb. 2, 2019.)
A history of Playland Ballroom was run in the Dec. 20 Tri-County News, even as its successor business, Generations Ballroom, closed its doors for good. Generations had been up for sale for some time and, with no buyer found yet, the building was closed.
Staff at Eden Valley-Watkins Elementary put on their annual Variety Show at the elementary school in Eden Valley for students Dec. 21.
The Kimball City Council held a special meeting Dec. 31 to discuss two more employee resignations: police officer Jenna Abel and Matt Serbus in public works. Arrangements were made with others, including Ed Borman who had retired from the public works position, to cover those duties until a replacement can be found and hired. No plans were made for replacing Abel in the immediate future; this decision may wait until a new police chief is found and hired.
A change in leadership and ownership was in store for Kimball Tae Kwon Do as Matt Serbus stepped down to spend more time with family, and Kristopher Reyes of Cold Spring took the reins. The studio will continue to run from The Body Strength Training Shed in Kimball, but under the name Rising Dragons Martial Arts School.
