One of the big stories of 2024 was the planned incursion into our area of Xcel Energy high-voltage transmission lines that will stretch about 175 miles from Lyon County to Becker. Several planned routes were put forth, and they were presented and discussed at several public meetings. A public hearing was held Oct. 30 with an administrative law judge who will report her findings to the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission.
Another ongoing story in 2024 was construction work at both Kimball schools. Work began in January, removing asphalt from the KES back parking lot, and footings were poured there for the Early Childhood wing. Both schools had their offices updated to become secure entrances. The elementary school got a new, designated space for a cafeteria. High school science rooms were re-done, as was the FACS (Home Ec) classroom. All of this work was part of a $8.1 million levy approved by voters in August 2022. The work was scheduled to be completed by the start of school, but it ran a little late. An open house was held Oct. 28 for the public to come and see the new parts of both schools. The high school parking lot was redone in late summer, with funds coming from elsewhere since that was excluded from the voter-approved improvements.
Postal issues plagued the country during 2024, and were especially problematic for newspapers. Some areas of Minnesota were much worse than our area. As 2025 dawns, there still is no real solution to these woes.
Cannabis was a big issue in Minnesota, including for our local cities. Not its use, but rather cannabis businesses. By the end of 2024, Stearns County set out rules for operating cannabis-related businesses which individual cities could adopt, or could choose to make them more stringent.
