5th & 6th boys’ basketball results

5th-grade boys win The Cubs traveled to Maple Lake for their first league games on Saturday, Jan. 13. Kimball won 24-18 and showed greatly improved teamwork. Scorers were led by Cameron Hunt with eight and Ben Serbus with six. Other scorers included Luke Mertens with four, and Adam Laabs, Nate Overland, and Jarred Merchant with two points each. The team won their second game against EV-W by the score of 21-18. Those scoring include Cameron Hunt with 10, Luke Mertens with three, and Adam Laabs, Nate Overland, Brady Faber, and Jarred Merchant with two apiece. Beyond scoring, the team met a number of their goals, including improvement in help-side defense and having everybody get a rebound. Strong contributions were made in both games by Will Spaulding, Joey VonWahlde, Isaiah Ehlinger, Brady Scheifelbein, and Michael Vossen. Way to go Cubs! 6th-grade boys split The 6th-grade Cubs also started their league games in Maple Lake on Jan. 13. The boys started strong and held a good lead by halftime. Improvements in defense and more confidence on offense were readily apparent. Unfortunately, the Cubs couldn’t get their shots to drop in the second half and ended up losing by one point at the end, 18-19. Scorers were led by Cole Denn with 12, along with Connor Wittenberg with four and Preston Peglow with two, In the second game, the Cubs demonstrated their displeasure with the result of the first game, and beat EV-W 16-7. Scorers were Cole Denn with seven, Ed Nielsen with four, Pat Arnold and Jonathan Massmann with two points and Connor Wittenberg with one. Every member of the team demonstrated that their hard work is paying off by playing better defense, rebounding and having scoring opportunities. In particular, Dallas Newman’s efforts showed the results of his hard work on both ends of the floor.  Both teams next contests are in Kimball the morning of Jan. 27.
