·

The 5th-grade boys’ basketball team traveled to St. Cloud for the winter shootout the weekend of Jan. 6-7. They started the tournament facing Milaca. They played a very tough game, leading at one point, but fell 20-23. Scorers were led by Cameron Hunt with 10, Luke Mertens with 6, and Nate Overland with 4 points. Adam Laabs and Ben Serbus did a number of things to help their teammates offensively, and played good defense. In addition, several of the 4th-grade team members participated and played quite well, including Joey VonWahlde, Will Spaulding, Jarred Merchant, Michael Vossen, and Brady Faber. In their second game, the Cubs played a competitive game versus St. Joe’s Waconia losing 26-35. The team did a great job adjusting on the go, but couldn’t quite get enough shots to fall. Scorers were Cameron Hunt with 18, Luke Mertens with 4, and Ben Serbus and Joey VonWahlde each with 2 points. Their final game had the Cubs facing Buffalo. The Cubs kept the game tight until the end, but fell 25-35. Again, some quick adjustments to pressure defense showed that the Cubs have enormous potential. Scorers were Cameron Hunt with 17, Ben Serbus with 4, and Luke Mertens and Joey VonWahlde with 2 points apiece. The team made improvements in each contest. Everybody played hard and learned new things. They no doubt will do well this year. Brent Hilbert, coach
