#739 Update Kimball Area Schools

·

Homecoming week September 22-26 is the week for school spirit at KAHS. We would love to see community members here for the Tuesday evening coronation which beings at 8 p.m. in the cafetorium. Thursday night will feature volleyball with JV and C-Squad beginning at 6 p.m. The football game will begin at 7 p.m. Friday evening. Dress-up days for students will be announced at school this week. Some “traditions” have been part of the week but are not endorsed by the school. The two most prominent are the Powder Puff game and the junior-senior toilet-papering. Please know that these events are not promoted or supervised by school staff. Further, over the past few years, I have heard from parents and students who sustained damage to their vehicles and their yards when students were out “decorating.” The potential for student injury, especially with young drivers when they are sneaking about at night is great. For that reason I am asking parents to help us. Certainly the connection to school will be stronger when students are excited about participating in activities. But getting involved in a negative and potentially dangerous activity should be stopped. We at school have very little we can do to stop what happens in the evenings outside of school. I also disagree with punishing everyone for the acts of some. That is why we need the help of parents. Some parents will say they have no control. But research would prove otherwise. Surveys of teenagers show that what parents say does have a big influence on what teens choose to do. When parents say “no” and have consequences in place for breaking rules, children are very likely to do as their parents wish. Please think about this when your child is heading out with friends. Let your children know what you expect in a firm yet understanding way. Allowing them to be part of negative or destructive actions “because it’s always been this way,” or “because everyone is doing it,” doesn’t make it right or safe. Help us promote a strong school by participating in a positive way. I look forward to seeing you at the festivities. Bus safety High school students participated in bus safety training last week. As a reminder to families and drivers, please remember to give buses the room they need. Watch for the flashing yellow and red lights. Do not pass when the lights are flashing. When picking students up at school, avoid the bus loading areas between 8-8:30 a.m. and 2:45-3:15 p.m. High school students should always be picked up at the south side of the building during bus loading times. Parent-teacher conferences High school parent-teacher conferences will take place from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Oct. 8 and 13, in the cafetorium. If you have questions before then, give your child’s teacher a call. Late start Classes at both schools will start two hours late Wednesday, Oct. 8. Teachers will be in meetings that day until 10 a.m.
