Accidents reported as deer hunting season begins

·

Just before 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, the Meeker County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a motorcycle accident on CSAH 1, a quarter mile north of MN Hwy 7.

Investigation shows that Steven William Quast, 54 of Hutchinson, was southbound on CSAH 1 when he struck a deer and lost control of the 1987 Harley Davidson motorcycle he was riding. The motorcycle rolled several times and came to rest in the west ditch. Quast was pronounced dead at the scene.

Meeker County Deputies, Cosmos Police, Cosmos Fire, and Cosmos Ambulance responded to the scene. The accident is still under investigation by the Meeker County Sheriff’s Office.

Just past noon Saturday, Nov. 7, medical assistance was called to Spring Hill Township, southwest of 290th Street and Hwy. 4, for a 14-year-old Melrose boy. The boy was hunting with his father and 12 other men. The group did a “drive” which flushed out a deer. Four men shot at the deer, and one of their shotgun slugs hit the boy in the upper left leg. The boy, who is not being named, was taken to Melrose Hospital and later transferred to St. Cloud Hospital where he is expected to stay overnight. Melrose Ambulance, Lake Henry Fire and Rescue, Melrose Police, and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources responded to the incident.

There are nearly a half-million deer hunters out there. Authorities urge caution, especially near standing corn fields.
