Alvin Winter of Watkins died Monday, Feb. 19, 2007, at Hilltop Care Center in Watkins. He was 76. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Watkins. Visitation is from 9-11 a.m. at the church. Alvin C. Winter was born April 13, 1930, in Watkins to Gerhard and Theresa (Meierhofer) Winter. He served in the U.S. Army from January 1953 to December 1954, and was stationed in Germany. Alvin married Janell Hennen Sept. 15, 1956, in St. Anthony Catholic Church in Watkins. He was employed at Cold Spring Granite until 1965. He was part owner of A & C Farm Service in Paynesville prior to owning the Union 76 Fuel Oil Service in Paynesville. He retired in 1996 and moved to Watkins in May of 2005. Alvin was a member of the Paynesville American Legion, where he had served as commander. He was also a retired member of the Paynesville Fire Department. His hobbies included fishing and hunting, playing cards and visiting the casino. Alvin was preceded in death by his parents and sister Margaret Westberg. Alvin is survived by his wife Janell of Watkins; children and their spouses Jack (and Margie) Winter of Paynesville, Deb (and Tim) Leithauser of Oakdale, Jody (and Todd) Lagergren of Coon Rapids, Gary Winter of Stillwater and his friend Kate Moyer of Rogers; grandchildren Cory (and Chelsey) Winter of Rockville, Melissa Winter of Paynesville, Kelsey Winter of Coon Rapids, Kayla Winter of Stillwater, Christine Winter of Stillwater, and Cole Leithauser of Oakdale; and brother Edmund Winter of Watkins. Arrangements were made by Ertl Funeral Home in Watkins.
