Legislative Updates

The legislative session continues to heat up as various bills face debates on the House and Senate floors. The most notable is the Safe and Supportive Schools Act which is up for consideration, and we?Äôll be hearing results in the next few days. If passed at the Senate level, the bill would then go to the House for their approval.

In the meantime, the House will be discussing their finance package today. It includes
$75 million new dollars for schools. A portion of the House version will provide an additional 1 percent to the general education formula. These are dollars that will benefit every district in this state. Once approved by the House, it will be debated with the Senate which has $41 million budgeted for education. The majority of Senate proposed dollars is earmarked for early childhood education and scholarships.

As you know, current legislation doesn?Äôt allow us to begin our school year with students until after Labor Day break. In 2015, Labor Day break is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 7, which means no school until Tuesday, Sept. 8. The recent addition of an amendment will allow school districts to begin the school year prior to Labor Day for only the 2015-2016 school year. Let?Äôs hope the introduced amendment gets some support, and it allows local school districts to determine when they start the 2015-16 school year. Remember, if nothing changes, the 2015-16 school year won?Äôt start until Sept. 8.

Senior of the Week:

The EV-W School District would like to recognize Dani Nelson, daughter of David and Kim. Dani is actively involved in numerous academic and athletic programs in our school system. She recently completed a successful senior season on the basketball team. The team relied on her for offensive production and her cool demeanor in pressure situations. Dani led the team in scoring and rebounds, and was always an offensive threat to the opponents. Congratulations to Dani and the team on their Sub-
Section 6AA South Runner-Up honors. The EV-W administration, faculty and staff are extremely proud of your accomplishments. Congratulations!
