On Tuesday, Dec. 4, the boys C-Squad opened up their season by hosting Royalton. The Cubs started a little slow offensively, but played very good defense throughout the game. They were able to jump to a 17-to-10 lead in the first half. However, the Royals were able to go on a 5-0 run to end the first half to cut the Cubs’ lead to
2 at halftime.
In the second half, the Cubs expanded their lead to 27-21. Again, the Royals battled back and hit 2 three-point shots in the last 90 seconds to tie the game. The Cubs were able to get a shot off to win at the buzzer, but it did not fall and the game went to overtime tied at 27. In overtime, the Cubs outscored the Royals 5-0 to pick up their first win of the year 32-27. Scoring for the Cubs was Ty Gustafson 12, Skylor Gruba 6, Lucas Jansky 6, and Devin Waldorf 4.
On Thursday, the Cubs were in Upsala for the first road game of the year. The Cubs were able to use their full court press to jump out to a 12-2 lead midway through the first half. The Cardinals made a run to end the half to make the halftime score 21-14. To start the second half the Cubs again went to the full court press and built a double digit lead. The Cardinals were able to hang around, but the Cub’s lead was never in real danger. The game ended with a Cubs victory by the score of 43-32. Kimball was led by Jamison Tubridy and Ty Gustafson with 10 points each. Also scoring was Lucas Jansky 8, Skylor Gruba, 7, Jake Spaulding 4, Gavin Loch 2, and Devin Waldorf 2.
On Friday, the Cubs finished a busy first week by hosting a tough Dassel-Cokato team. The boys battled short-handed with a much bigger Chargers team. At halftime, the Cubs trailed 21-14.
In the second half, the deficit reached double digits midway through. With 9 minutes left in the game the Cubs went back to a full court press and were able to cut the lead to 2, but that was as close as it would get. The Chargers made a couple more shots and made just enough free throws to put the game away 37-32. Leading the way for the Cubs was Skylor Gruba and Jamison Tubridy with 13 and 12 respectfully. Also scoring was Ty Gustafson 5 and Jake Spaulding 2.
This week the Cubs will host Eden Valley-Watkins at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11.
