Caird enjoys spending time with students

·

Since April 18-24 is National Volunteer Week, it is fitting to recognize one of the newer volunteer efforts in the Kimball community. Kimball Elementary School (KES) has almost completed its first year as a Foster Grandparents program site. Jon Clark, Principal of KES, contacted the Central MN Foster Grandparent Program in January 2003 to express his interest in the program. He spoke to Jean Yager, area supervisor, about becoming a program site. Yager placed ads in the paper and notices in local church bulletins in search of foster grandparent volunteers. Gwen Caird came forward as a volunteer after seeing the ads. One of her friends is involved as a foster grandparent in another community, so she was familiar with the idea. Caird felt that she had some extra time on her hands since retiring in 2000. She began volunteering as a foster grandparent at KES in September 2003. She averages more than 15 hours per week, totalling 360 hours in seven months. Caird arrives at the school early and greets everyone with a big smile. She helps students with reading and math, especially those students who may need some extra attention or one-on-one help. Principal Clark said Caird works well with the age groups she is assigned. Students enjoy spending time with her and love it when she has lunch with them. Caird feels it has been a rewarding experience, and sees marked improvement, especially in three of the students she works with. The foster grandparents program is currently looking for someone to volunteer in the Kindergarten classroom in Watkins. Volunteers must be 60 years or older and willing to serve an average of 15-40 hours per week. In return, volunteers receive a small tax-free stipend of $2.65 per hour, transportation reimbursement, daily lunch, accident and liability insurance while on assignment, education and training, paid vacation and sick leave, recognition and social activities, and an annual medical review. If you or someone you know would enjoy giving time, talents and energy to volunteer, please call Jean Yager toll-free at (866) 895-7992.
