Cathleen “Caye” Aho, 79


Cathleen “Caye” Aho of Waite Park, died Tuesday, May 24, 2022, at her Waite Park home, with the comfort of her family by her side. She was 79.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, at Evangelical Covenant Church in Dassel, with Pastor Darren Olson officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Monday, June 13, at the Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel, and continue one hour before the service Tuesday at the church. Interment of the urn will be at Lake Union Evangelical Covenant Cemetery in rural South Haven.

Cathleen Marie Wilberg was born July 23, 1942, in Thief River Falls, Minn., to Roy and Signhild (Hasselberg) Wilberg. Caye was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist faith. She graduated from Greenway High School in Coleraine, Minn. She attended Itasca Community College, and received her bachelor’s degree in education at Bemidji State University in 1963. Upon graduation, Caye began her teaching career in Saint Cloud, teaching at the elementary level at both Wilson Elementary School and North Junior High School. While living in Saint Cloud, Caye was united in marriage to Albert Yost on June 4, 1966. After their marriage, Caye and Al resided in Grand Rapids where Caye taught for a few years. They moved to Dassel in the early 1970s, and Caye settled into Kimball Elementary School where she taught until her retirement, teaching kindergarten, second grade, and Title I. Caye loved teaching, and each and every one of her students held a special place in her heart.

Caye and John Aho were united in marriage Aug. 3, 1984. Together they made their home in rural Dassel until John’s death in 2016 after which time Caye moved to Waite Park to live with her son and his family. Spending time with her son and grandchildren brought her immense joy, and she valued that time the most.

Caye loved to travel, and she took many road trips with her son. Some of their many journeys involved trips to Florida, California, Washington state, Washington D.C., and Texas. She enjoyed spending time outdoors camping, snowmobiling, or just enjoying nature. She was an avid reader, loved to crochet, could often be found doing crossword puzzles or playing cards with friends. She was a people person who could easily strike up a conversation with people she just met. She loved life and everyone she knew.

Caye was preceded in death by her husband John Aho, her parents, sister Catherine Rairie, baby brother Clayton Paul Wilberg, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

She is survived by her son Jeremy Yost and his partner Samantha Larson of Waite Park; grandsons Jaxon and Riley Yost, and Caiden Larson; nephew Rodger Rairie, and great-nephew Nathaniel Rairie.
