What’s happening at the Eden Valley Area Library?

By Sue Sheil

Hopefully, one of your New Year’s resolutions is to become more involved in your library. There’s lots to do this month with an interesting book discussion, a fun toddler story time, and some great movies shown in the Community Center. We’re also offering some interesting reading selections and shelves of DVDs.

Stop in for the EVAL Book Club meeting Tuesday, Jan. 15, at 5:30 p.m. The discussion will center around “Those Who Save Us,” by Jenna Blum. All are welcome, even those who haven’t read the book.

Our toddler program–Storytime Stars–will meet Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 10 a.m. The little ones will enjoy the “Do ¥ou Want to Build a Snowman?” theme. For more information call the library at (320) 453-4344.

“Mamma Mia, Here We Go Again!” (rated PG-13) comes to Movies on the Big Screen Friday, Jan. 11. “Ten years after Mamma Mia… you’re invited back to the magical Greek island of Kalokairi in an all-new musical sequel based on the songs of ABBA. Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) is now pregnant, and like her mother Donna (Meryl Streep), she’ll need to take risks. The film’s original cast returns, with new additions including Lily James as a young Donna, Andy Garcia and Oscar winner Cher.”

Friday, Jan. 25, come and enjoy “Small Foot” (rated PG) “Migo is a friendly Yeti whose world gets turned upside down when he discovers something that he didn’t know existed – a human. He soon faces banishment from his snowy home when the rest of the villagers refuse to believe his fantastic tale. Hoping to prove them wrong, Migo embarks on an epic journey to find the mysterious creature that can put him back in good graces with his simple community.”

All movies start at 6 p.m. in the EV Community Center. Enjoy a free showing, popcorn and beverage.

Schoolroom Storytime is still looking for readers. This simple story time program allows students kindergarten through grade 2 to enjoy a chance to listen to  to a good book from new readers. Call the library at (320) 453-4344 for more information.

And don’t forget to sign up for the adult reading promotion, Mustache Your Thoughts. You’ll get a great EVAL tote and possibly a sweet treat while practicing your skills as a book critic.

Staying in during a cold winter’s night? Curl up with a good book. Check out “Minnesota Made Me,” by Patrick C. Borzi and find out what shapes the careers and values of Minnesota athletes. The author interviewed more than 20 Minnesota sports figures including Lindsey Whalen and Adam Thielen. This book was donated by Elvera “Peps” Neuman, a pioneer for local women’s basketball. She’s a good friend of the library.

If you’re looking for a good DVD, check out the complete first season of “The Crown.” Music lovers might enjoy the rollicking “La La Land,” and for a great family film try “Wonder.” With more than 700 DVDs, we have something for everyone.

Until next month, we’ll see you at the library.
