What’s happening at the Eden Valley Area Library?
Know the meaning of the Summer Slide? The average student loses two months of reading skills over the summer break. Studies show that reading four to five books during that break will have a positive impact comparable to summer school enrollment. Plus, it gives your child the opportunity to choose books of interest to them. The library continues to support this concept with our Summer Vacation Bingo. Have the kids stop in for a bingo card. We’re here to help keep reading fun and interesting.
Books on Wheels is a monthly book/DVD delivery service that EVAL offers seniors and people who otherwise cannot get to the library. Brookview Apartments in Eden Valley gets books delivered. We compiled a list of favorite books and authors that Brookview patrons prefer and supply them with a variety of 15 books each month. The library has been purchasing large print books, along with any requests, to accommodate the need. Next time you see Pat Schlangen ask her how it’s going.
Summer Reading Program: The Magic of Reading is heating up. Judy, Marilyn and crew are true believers in the power of the imagination of children and how reading can enhance their lives. Each session they talk a bit about what The Magic of Reading means to them and the kids share where their imaginations have taken them during their
reading get-away.
In August the kids can look forward to TDI Therapy Dogs and Dog Trainer on the 8th, and Minnesota Zoo on the 21st. All sessions run from 9:30 a.m.–11 a.m. Register with Judy at (320)
266-5515, or mailto:jjthielen@meltel.net.
Movies on the Big Screen showings continue with two movies each month. Where can you go to relax in a casual and air-conditioned venue with a cool beverage and popcorn and enjoy a great movie on a 15’ x 18’ screen without having to drive out of town? The answer is…Right here at the Eden Valley Community Center. And it’s all FREE. Upcoming movies are posted in the library window, around town, in the local papers and on Facebook. We will offer a craft/games hour at 5 p.m. courtesy of our local C4P group and Movie/Beverage/Popcorn at 6 p.m. in the Community Center, sponsored by the Eden Valley Area Library. Come on out and enjoy a night of entertainment and fun. Can’t beat the price.
We are offering another much-needed service. The MN Employment and Economic Development app is now on all patron computers to help patrons find employment. It also offers help for the blind and visually impaired. If you know of anyone who could use the help, please direct them to the library.
Don’t forget to mark your calendars for our annual Fall Fundraiser. It will be Sunday, Sept. 16,
at Dino’s Lakeside starting at
5 p.m. Tickets are available at the library, City Hall, Dino’s Lakeside and from any EVAL volunteer. Cost for adults is $20 in advance and $25 at the door. This year we are offering $14 tickets for children age
12 and younger. It will be a fun-filled evening with live music, a great buffet, Take-a-Chance, Wine Pull, plus silent and live auctions.
Until next month, we’ll see you at the library.
