The American Legion Auxiliary of Minnesota held their Gift Shops Nov. 26, 27, and 28. The St. Cloud V.A. Medical Center participated on these days asking for volunteers from the units in surrounding areas. Gift Shop is held for veterans who are staying at the V.A. and are unable to purchase gifts for their immediate family members. Each veteran can choose a gift for themselves, their spouse, and their children. The gifts are purchased in advance by the Department of Minnesota. This year, some of the items to choose from were:
• Box of chocolates
• Large duffle bag
• Men’s toiletries
• Women’s toiletries
• Men’s gloves
• Women & children’s caps, mittens and scarves
• Stuffed animals
And veterans could have the choice of a $20 gift card for Walmart just for them.
These gifts are purchased from donations from the units of the American Legion Auxiliary through their Poppy Fund. So remember, when you donate money for a poppy during our Poppy Days, you are helping to make Christmas a little bit better for veterans and their families.
This year, the Kimball American Legion Auxiliary had five ladies volunteer on Monday, Nov. 26. Carol Santone-Royal, Audrey White, Linda Rose, JoAnn Hendricks, and Renee Berscheid helped set up the tables and wrapping stations. The items were placed on the tables and ready for the shoppers. On the first day, we shopped and wrapped gifts for one building where the veterans were unable to get out and shop on their own. They were given a form to fill out previously, so we would know what they wanted to get. The gifts were wrapped and delivered to the ward.
It is a very good feeling to help those who have done so much for us and our country. Let us remember our veterans, their families and all who are serving this country this holiday season. May God bless you and the U.S.A.
