Weather column: A cold front Sunday night into Monday brought with it scattered showers and thunderstorms across North Dakota and South Dakota into Minnesota. Some of these showers and thunderstorms were on the severe side. The main threat from these storms was large hail and damaging winds along with some isolated tornadoes.
Thunderstorms stayed with us into Monday night as the cold front continued to move through an unstable air mass. Dew points were in the mid- to upper-60s on Monday. This continued to fuel the storms across the region.
Drier and much cooler conditions returned for Tuesday. High temperatures on Tuesday were only in the 50s and 60s. This was our first taste of fall-like conditions of the season.
Dry conditions should stay with us for Wednesday. High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than average for this time of the year for the midweek.
A fairly active weather pattern will return by Thursday into Friday. Shower and thunderstorm chances will stay with us all the way into the Labor Day Weekend.
If you do have plans for your last summer fun, keep an eye on changing weather conditions this weekend. Temperatures should be near average through Monday.
Have a great upcoming Labor Day Weekend!
Weather history: On this date in 1863, records show that a “devastating killing frost affected most of Minnesota.” It “killed vines and damaged corn across the state.”
Weather fact: Many plants can be damaged or killed by freezing temperatures or frost. The damage to plants “varies with the type of plant and tissue exposed to low temperatures.”
