What a week we have had already, and the week isn’t over. We had record- and near record-high temperatures Monday into Tuesday. Much of the area had highs Monday in the low-to mid-70s, but some spots in southern Minnesota had highs approaching 80 degrees by Tuesday.
The warmer air Tuesday was out ahead of a cold front, so the temperatures in western Minnesota were only in the low- to mid-60s. That cold front brought some rain across the area Tuesday night.
The rain will be with us -Wednesday along with much colder air. In fact, some snow could mix in by Wednesday night into Thursday. That’s right, after record high temps earlier in the week, now we are talking about some snow. As they say, the weather is never boring in Minnesota as we can have wild swings.
For those trick-or-treating on Halloween, the snow should come to an end by Thursday afternoon and evening, but it will be cold with highs only in the lower 40s, with overnight lows into the upper 20s. Make sure you bundle up the kids and yourself.
Don’t forget: this weekend is when Daylight Saving Time ends as we will turn the clocks back one hour Sunday at 2 a.m.
Weather history: On this date in 1951, records show that “an early snowstorm drops as much as eight inches of snow in central and west central Minnesota.” Parts of north central Minnesota also saw some measurable snow.
Weather facts: Did you know that there must be pollen or dust in the air to form snow? In fact, extremely cold water droplets freeze onto a pollen or dust particle in the sky, which helps to create ice crystals. They eventually fall to the ground.
