Cooler than normal temps for this weekend

·

It was a cloudy and cool start to the week. High temperatures were generally in the mid to upper 30s and lower 40s statewide for Monday and Tuesday. A weak disturbance brought some rain mixed with some light snow across parts of the state on Monday and Tuesday. Accumulations were very light across the region. We had a bit of a lull in the light rain and snow statewide on Tuesday. However, another weak disturbance will arrive on Wednesday. This system could bring with it some light snow beginning Tuesday night and lingering into Wednesday. Snowfall amounts should be light with this system as well.

Cool Canadian high pressure will settle-in on the backside of this system. Expect temperatures to be anywhere from 10 to 15 degrees cooler than average for this time of the year into the weekend.

This cooler air mass will help area lakes start to make some ice as temperatures are expected to stay below the freezing point around the clock for late into the weekend and even into early next week. We should moderate a bit by next Tuesday as high temperatures could reach the mid 30s.

The 30 day outlook calls for near normal temperatures with above normal precipitation. Enjoy the rest of the week.

Weather history: On this day in 1844 historical records show that a “large prairie fire took place at Fort Snelling. There would be more wildfires later in the week due to dry conditions.”

Weather fact: Did you know that wildfires can start easily under warm and dry conditions with low relative humidity? The wind can “carry” the wildfires swiftly through woods and prairies as the fires can spread quickly.
