Fletcher trial begins A commitment trial begins this week for convicted sex offender Shawn Fletcher. He has served prison time, but is considered dangerous and highly likely to re-offend. The county attorney and State of Minnesota will present evidence that he should be committed to a state mental institution until he can prove that he no longer poses a danger to anyone. Fletcher had been released Oct. 8, 2001, after serving 60 months of his 81-month sentence. He has since served additional time for release violation (not involving re-offense). If the commitment hearing fails, another community notification meeting will be held before Fletcher is released. He is currently being held in Stearns County Jail pending the hearing this week.
