Cruz wins spelling bee

Jehonadab (Joe) Cruz, son of Maria and Benito Cruz of Kimball, was named the champion of the 20th annual Kimball district spelling bee at held Kimball High School Thursday, Feb. 12. Joe is a sixth-grader at Kimball Elementary. He won the contest by correctly spelling the words “pristine” and “topaz.” Joe now moves on to the Regional Spelling Bee at St. John’s University at 9 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 24. The winner of the regional contest will go on to the state spelling bee later this winter. Tiffany Mehrhoff, a seventh-grader from Kimball Area High School, was the contest runner-up. Other students who participated in the district spelling bee are listed below. o 5th grade – Ryan Dammann, Cameron Wittenberg, Tyler Loch, Peter Frank and Kaily Fennema. o 6th grade – Beth Libbesmeier, Kelsi Woods, Kristina Mackereth and Erin Gilpatrick. o 7th grade – Becky Vossen, Bobby Arens, Katie Brugger, Kara Weiland, and Amanda Carlson o 8th grade – Jamie Krantz, Theresa Kummer, Jon Green, Dan Kriedeman, Sammy Stewart-James and Heather Ryan Congratulations to Joe and all participants.
