Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa (Game one)
Trailing 2-0 after one inning, the Cubs baseball team rallied back with a five-run second and two-run third inning to take a 7-4 lead over the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Jaguars heading into the bottom of the third. This is the last time the Cubs led in the game.
The Jaguars took the lead back for good with a six-run third inning, and tacked on two more insurance runs in the fifth to send the Cubs to a 12-7 loss in game one of a road doubleheader May 6.
Offensively, the Cubs posted 10 hits. Gavin Mesenbrink led the team with his three-for-four day at the plate. Mason Danelke finished two-for-three with an RBI, and Tate Winter one-for-three with four RBI, including a second–inning grand slam to also lead the Cubs.
Notably, the Cubs hit back-to-back home runs in that second inning when Brandon Henkemeyer followed Winter’s grand slam with a solo home run.
Bryant Knaus took the pitching loss for the Cubs, giving up 10 runs, eight earned, on nine hits, and four walks over two and one-third innings.
Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa (Game two)
The Cubs again trailed the Jaguars 2-0 after one inning but, unlike the first game of the -doubleheader, the Cubs couldn’t rally all the way back in an eventual 14-2 loss in game two of the road doubleheader.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Cubs did rally to within one, at 2-1, with a Brandon Henkemeyer RBI single, but got no closer.
The Jaguars outscored the Cubs 12-1 over the final three innings, scoring four runs in each of those innings, to provide for the final margin.
Offensively, the Cubs posted four hits. Mason Danelke, Tate Winter, Henkemeyer, and Andray Stang each recorded a hit, with Winter and Henkemeyer each driving in a run.
Henkemeyer took the pitching loss for the Cubs, giving up nine runs, eight earned, on nine hits and three walks, and striking out four over five and two-thirds innings.
Royalton
The Cubs and Royalton Royals remained in a scoreless tie heading into the bottom of the third inning. Then, the Royals broke that tie with a three-run third inning.
Rallying back a couple of times, the Cubs could never get closer than two runs the rest of the way in an eventual 6-2 road loss on May 13.
After that three-run third inning, the Cubs rallied back with a run in the fourth on a Ronnie Arnold RBI single. Still trailing 3-1 going into the bottom of the fifth, the Royals tacked on two runs in the fifth, putting the Cubs in a 5-1 deficit.
The Cubs again responded with a run in the sixth on a Brandon Henkemeyer RBI sacrifice fly, drawing the team back to within three, at 5-2, but the Royals answered with a run in the bottom of the inning, providing for the final margin.
As a team, the Cubs finished with five hits. Gavin Mesenbrink and Arnold each finished two-for-three to lead the Cubs, with Arnold driving in one run.
Noah Merten took the pitching loss for the Cubs, giving up six runs, two earned, on six hits and three walks, and striking out one over five and one-third innings. Maple Lake (Game one)
Locked in a 3-3 tie heading into the sixth inning after giving up a 3-1 lead earlier in the game, the Cubs took the lead for good with three unanswered runs over the final two innings to pull out the 6-3 win in game one of a road -doubleheader on May 15.
The Cubs took the lead for good with two runs in the sixth on a two-run, two-out single by Mason Danelke. The Cubs tacked on an unearned insurance run in the seventh, providing for the final margin.
Offensively, the Cubs posted six hits. Noah Merten led the Cubs, going two-for-three with a run scored. Danelke drove in those two runs, and Tate Winter and Brandon Henkemeyer also each drove in a run to pace the Cubs.
Bryant Knaus earned the win in relief, giving up no runs on one hit and three walks, and striking out two over three innings.
Max Zoller started the game for the Cubs, giving up three runs, one earned, on four hits and six walks, and striking out six over four innings.
Maple Lake (Game two)
The Cubs scored single runs in both the second and third innings, and that proved to be more than enough for Cubs’ starting pitcher Brandon Henkemeyer in a complete game 2-0 shutout win in game two of the road doubleheader.
In his winning effort, Henke-meyer gave up just three hits, walked one, and struck out 12 over his seven innings.
The Cubs got on the board in the second inning via a Brayden Johnson RBI single. The team tacked on another run in the third via a Tate Winter sacrifice fly.
As a team, the Cubs posted just three hits, including one each by Mason Danelke, Ronnie Arnold, and Johnson.
With these two wins, the Cubs halted an eight-game losing streak and improved to 6-11 on the season.
