Cubs beat Royals, 65-56; lose to ACGC

The Kimball Cubs boys’ basketball team defeated the Royalton Royals in an exciting non-conference match-up, 64-56 in overtime. The Cubs used a patient offense and aggressive defense to upend the Royals. Randy Saukkola hit a big three-pointer before the half to cut Royalton’s lead to three. The Cubs finally put together a strong third quarter and were leading 44-43 at the end of the third. The Cubs had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation, but a 10 foot shot by Preston Looman rimmed-out, forcing the game to overtime. The Cubs were patient in overtime, using good shots to take the lead at the beginning of overtime. With 20 seconds remaining, and a tied score, Matt Landwehr had a steal that resulted in a basket and a foul. A technical foul by a Royalton player gave the Cubs another two points. The Cubs were led by senior forward Preston Looman, who finished the game with 17 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists. Matt Landwehr and Aaron Rossman each added 15 points. Joe Masberg chipped in with eight points and Eric Voigt ended up with six. Jaguars beat Cubs, 75-50 After an exciting win against the Royalton Royals, the Kimball Cubs boys’ basketball team fell to the BBE Jaguars Thursday, February 26, 75-50. The Jaguars had a commanding lead, 23-8, at the end of the first quarter. The Cubs were led by Aaron Rossman, who finished the game with 16 points, including two from behind the arc. Preston Looman followed Ross man by chipping in 12 points, including a perfect four-of-four from the free-throw line. Matt Landwehr knocked down two three-pointers and ended with eight points. Derek Kunkel and Joe Masberg added six points each, and Kunkel finished with eight assists. Cubs lose in tight non-  conference match-up The Kimball Cubs boys’ basketball team lost to ACGC on Friday, Feb. 27, by a final score of 78-58. The game was closer than the score indicated by staying within five points during the duration of the game. The Falcons scored 27 points in the final quarter to pull away from the Cubs. ACGC scored 11 points in the final minute and held the Cubs scoreless during the last minute. ACGC led by six at halftime and Kimball played a strong third quarter to keep the game close. Preston Looman had a career night by dumping in 31 points and six rebounds. He also hit three three-pointers, was six for seven from the free-throw line, and was eight for 13 from inside the arc totaling the 31 point total including six rebounds. Joe Masberg chipped in with 10 points, Derek Kunkel added five, and Aaron Rossman and Randy Saukkola each contributed four points. The regular season for the Cubs is winding down with the two final games being played this week which include Maple Lake and Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted. The Cubs also face the Annandale Cardinals Thursday, March 11, in the first round of the District 20 playoffs, at Annandale.
