Cubs close season with another close win

The Kimball softball season ended with the final regular season game against St. John’s Prep (SJP) Tuesday, May 18. After playing three or more games each week all season it was unusual to play just one game in the final week. In a season of close games, the Cubs prevailed once again with a tense 2-1 victory. Ten of Kimball’s 20 games were decided in the last inning, with the Cubs winning six of those 10 games. Both pitchers and defenses were sharp in this game with only three hits for the Cubs and four for SJP. Each team committed only one error and Kimball pitcher Jami Weigelt gave up only four walks. The Cubs stran-ded 11 baserunners during the game, unable to get a base hit to break the game open. SJP left six runners on base. The Cubs earned their two runs when Amanda Schiefelbein walked, stole second and third and was driven home on a single by Jessica Gully. Gully stole second and came around to score on Angie Garding’s single to put the Cubs up 2-0. SJP earned a run, but a great defensive play by Garding took out the tying run at third base. The Cubs entered subsection play at 4:30 p.m. Monday, May 24 against No. 1 seeded Annandale. The Cardinals are two time defending Subsection 20 champions, and are this year’s Wright County Conference champions. It might be a tall order, but if the Cubs have a close game, this season has shown that anything can happen in the last inning.
