The Kimball Cubs traveled to Belgrade to take on the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Jaguars for their homecoming game. The Jags would gain momentum very quickly, but passing records for Kimball fell by the end of the evening. Injuries turned the usually even keeled Cub offense into a passing frenzy, executing only three running plays in the second half. The aerial show gave Kimball the “quick strike” scoring we needed to get back into the game. To start the game, lightening struck the Kimball defense as BBE scored on two of the first three times they touched the ball. Two long touchdown runs put the BBE up 14-0. The Cubs were only able to muster five first downs for the first quarter. In the second quarter, the teams traded possessions until the Kimball offense, behind junior quarterback Jeff Hunt, started to move the football. Hunt bashed into the end zone on a 3-yard run, making the score 14-6 in favor of the Jags. Unfortunately, BBE scored quickly after a long kickoff return, making it 20-6. As if it couldn’t get any worse, BBE punched in a final score before the half with 34.6 seconds to make it 27-6. The Cubs tried two desperation heaves to no avail before the halftime horn. Kimball came out in the second half and just scorched the Jaguar defense, accumulating 400 plus yards passing for the game. Hunt hit junior receiver Jeff Miller on a long pass completion; Miller added another catch but the Cubs were denied the end zone. On our next possession, Kimball drove the length of the field and Hunt connected with senior tight end Devin Rosenow over the middle to make the score 27-12 in favor of BBE. After a Jaguar punt, senior receiver Kevin Sommers caught and ran into BBE territory. Hunt then turned to Rosenow, who became a one-man pinball after a reception, taking it into the Cub end zone. Sommers hauled in the two-point conversion which made the score 27-20. Each team then traded scores again as the Jaguars piled in from short yardage to make the score 33-20. Miller and Hunt hooked up once again, but this time it resulted in a 63-yard touchdown for the Cubs. With four minutes to go in the game, BBE delivered the dagger on the third sweep of the game that went for a Jaguar touchdown. Junior receivers Matt Dingmann and Ricky Massmann, along with Rosenow, had key catches in a final Kimball offensive effort. An interception deep in BBE territory spelled the end for the Cubs, 39-26. Junior quarterback Jeff Hunt, behind a stellar effort from his offensive lineman and receivers, broke the school record for yards passing in a single game. The old record of 305 yards was previously held by Scott Kunkel; it now belongs to Jeff with a whopping 408-yard day.
