The Cubs’ baseball team opened their 2012 season with a 6-1 victory against Rockford. Tritton Tschida started on the hill for the Cubs and went five and two-thirds innings, holding the rockets to only one run. Aaron Laabs came in the sixth inning to get the Cubs out on a bases-loaded jam and finished out the game. Offensively the Cubs were led by Austin Ruehle, who was 2-3 with one RBI, Quentin Bryce, who had two RBIs, and Laabs, who reached base all three times with walks.
In their second game of the year, the Cubs traveled to Maple Lake. Poor defense was the downfall of the Cubs that day. They committed six errors and fell behind 8-0 early. However, the Cubs continued to fight and hit the ball well, but fell short with the final score ending up 12-8. Offensively, Ruehle again had a good day going 4-4 with three runs scored and a triple. Jordan Joseph was 2-3 with four RBIs, and Tschida was
also 2-3.
The third game of the year was another conference game in which the Cubs went to Howard Lake. Once again, defense played a major factor in the final outcome of the game. The Lakers ended up ten run ruling the Cubs 13-3. The Cubs jumped out to a 3-0 lead, and it looked as if they were on their way to victory but the Lakers were able to score ten unearned runs. At the plate the Cubs scattered five hits and Tim Konz had the
only RBI.
The next opponent on the Cubs’ schedule had them traveling to B-B-E for a double header. In the first game of the double header, starting pitcher Aaron Laabs struck out five in just over four innings of work, but poor defense again had the Cubs reeling. B-B-E took game one with a 12-3 victory. At the plate, Bryce and Tschida both collected two hits.
In game two, the Cubs came out swinging and scored four in the first inning, and worked their way to a 6-1 lead. B-B-E pecked away at Kimball’s lead, and eventually won 8-6 putting the Cubs record to 1-4. Bryce capped off a good day at the plate going 3-4, and starting pitcher Cameron Hunt went 2-4.
To cap off a four-game week, the Cubs traveled to Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity in a game that they needed to win to get back on track. With pitching getting thin, senior Austin Ruehle got his first varsity start and first time pitching in two years. LP/HT was able to score four runs in the first, and then Ruehle settled down and didn’t allow another run through five innings. Offensively, the Cubs pounded out 15 hits being led by Jordan Joseph’s 4-5 day with seven RBIs. Preston Peglow and Quentin Bryce also added three hits apiece. The hot bats led the Cubs to a 16-8 victory and raised their
record to 2-4.
