The Kimball Cub’s football team held their year-end awards banquet on Nov. 13 at a pot-luck supper at the high school. Senior captain, linebacker, and tight end Jeremy Dahnke was named to the Central Minnesota All-Conference first team. He was also voted the Most Valuable Defensive back by his teammates. Dahnke led the team in defensive points with 84. He recorded 24 tackles and 30 assists with five tackles and three assists for loss, with two and half quarterback sacks. On the offensive side of the ball, Dahnke led all receivers with 178 receiving yards on 19 catches, his longest catch was for 29 yards. He also rushed for 15 yards. Senior captain, offensive lineman and defensive lineman Brandon Hurrle was voted the Most Valuable Offensive and Defensive Lineman by his teammates. It was the second year in a row that he was named MVP on the defensive line. He was also named to the Section 5AA All-Section team. Hurrle has been a solid starter on the both sides of the line for three years. He was second in defensive points with 79. He recorded 26 tackles and 16 assists, with two quarterback sacks. Senior captain, fullback, and defensive lineman Luke Deutsch received special recognition from the Central Minnesota Conference as an honorary member of the All-Conference team. Deutsch was a three-year starter for the Cubs on defense and saw both his junior and senior years cut short because of season-ending injuries. He holds the school record for blocked kicks in a game at three. Junior running back and linebacker Erich Deutsch was named to the second team All-Central Minnesota Conference. His teammates also voted him the Most Valuable Offensive Back and he earned Academic All-Conference honors by carrying a 3.7 GPA or better. Deutsch led the Cubs in rushing with 510 yards on 135 carries, with a longest run of 33. An ankle injury ended his year with three games to go in the season. He also led Kimball kick returners with 350 yards in returns. On defense he recorded 17 tackles and 19 assists, two tackles for loss and one quarterback sack. Junior punter, kicker, full back, tight end, linebacker, and defensive lineman Paul Hughes was named Most Valuable Special Teams Player by his teammates and Most Improved Player by the coaching staff. Paul had a 29.25 average punting the ball 52 times. He averaged 40 yards kicking off. He recorded 12 tackles and 10 assists on defense. Senior linebacker and offensive lineman Al Holker was awarded the Dean Stang Award by the coaching staff. The Stang Award has been given since 1986 in memory of Dean Stang, a member of the class of 1986. Stang was killed in a farm accident and his family started the award to honor a player who is not necessarily the star of the team, but who contributes to the team with his strong work ethic, positive attitude and love of football. Holker, an undersized player, strongly fits the criteria for the award. Because of his enthusiasm, hard work, and dedication he became a starter his senior year. He recorded 19 tackles and 29 assists with two fumble recoveries. Junior linebacker and tight end Jordan Miller earned Academic All-Conference award for carrying a 3.7 GPA of better. Juniors Erich Deutsch and Aaron Dahlinger were named captains for the 2004 season.
