Cubs’ season ends at hands of Falcons
·
Facing elimination, the thirteenth-seeded Cubs baseball team jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a Tate Winter RBI single in the top of the first inning of a Section 6AA Baseball Tournament game versus the eighth-seeded Foley Falcons. It was nearly all Falcons after that.
The Falcons posted four runs in each of the first two innings and the Cubs never fully recovered in an eventual 12-2 loss via ten-run rule in six innings from Dick Putz Field in St. Cloud on May 29, ending the Cubs’ season.
Errors did hurt the Cubs in this game. The team made six errors, leading to eight unearned Falcon runs.
After falling behind 8-1 after two innings, the Cubs gave up two more runs in the fifth to drop into a 10-1 deficit. The Cubs did get back on the board in the sixth when Winter scored an unearned run, but the Falcons ended the game via ten-run rule in the bottom of the inning with two of its own unearned runs.
Offensively, the Cubs posted six hits in the loss. Winter led the team, going two for two with an RBI.
Cubs starter Max Zoller took the pitching loss, giving up eight runs, four earned, on four hits, five walks and two hit batters, and striking out one over two innings.
With the loss, the Cubs say goodbye to five seniors, in Brandon Henkemeyer, Brock Libbesmeier, Ronnie Arnold, Bryant Knaus and Hunter Gebhardt. The Cubs finish the season with an 8-15 record.
