Sami Winter drove in six runs on two hits to lead the Cubs softball team past Royalton 14-0 in its season opener on April 10. Winter hit an RBI single in the second inning and a two-run single in the third inning.
The Cubs were the first to get on the board in the first when Winter hit into a fielder’s choice, but two runs scored.
In the top of the second inning, the Cubs added to their early lead when Baylie Winter drew a walk, scoring one run, and Sami Winter singled, scoring one run.
Then, in the third, the Cubs scored six runs on five hits. Riley Fischer singled, driving in one run, Claire Honer drew a walk, forcing in another run, and Baylie Winter hit into an RBI fielder’s choice. Winter hit a two-run single, and Mazie Jurek an RBI single to also account for the scoring.
Claire Maus earned the win for the Cubs. Maus pitched a no-hitter over five innings, striking out nine and walking one.
Offensively, the Cubs tallied 11 hits. Jurek finished three for four, and Fischer two for three to lead the way. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, collecting eight walks.
The Cubs also stole six bases and didn’t commit a single error.
Dassel-Cokato
Riley Fischer was dominant in the pitching circle for the Cubs, as the hurler rang up 16 strikeouts in the team’s 6-2 road victory on April 11. Fischer gave up five hits and two runs over seven innings while walking two.
The Cubs opened the scoring in the first on a Claire Maus two-run single. The team added to this early lead in the top of the second inning after Fischer grounded out, and Dassel-Cokato committed an error, each scoring one run.
Offensively, the Cubs tallied 10 hits in the game. Maus drove the middle of the lineup, leading the team with two RBI and going three for four on the day. Elaina Fink also led the Cubs in going three for three. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, amassing five walks for the game.
The team also stole six bases in the game, led by Lilliah Krippner’s two. The Cubs didn’t commit a single error in the field.
Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City (Game One)
Riley Fischer struck out 15 batters as the pitcher led Kimball past Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 13-0 in game one of a road doubleheader on April 15. Fischer tossed a no-hitter over five innings while walking none.
The Cubs opened the scoring in the top of the first thanks to two singles. The team first got on the board on a Mazie Jurek RBI single.
Fischer then homered to left field, scoring two runs in the top of the second, adding to the Cubs’ lead.
In the top of the third, the Cubs scored five runs on five hits. Lilliah Krippner hit an RBI double, Claire Honer an RBI single, Ella Johnson an RBI double, Elaina Fink an RBI single, and Jurek an RBI double.
As a team, the Cubs collected 16 hits in the game. Jurek, Fink, and Johnson each collected three hits, and Fischer and Jurek each drove in two runs.
Jurek and Sami Winter each stole multiple bases. The Cubs ran wild on the base paths, tallying eight stolen bases. The team also again didn’t commit a single error.
Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City (Game Two)
Claire Honer drove in four runs on three hits to lead the Cubs past Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 12-1 in the game two of the doubleheader. Honer hit a two-run home run to left field in the second, hit a two-run triple in the third, and an RBI double in the fourth.
The Cubs opened the scoring in the first on a Claire Maus RBI double. Three more Cubs runs crossed the plate in the second inning to extend the lead to 4-0, behind Honer’s two-run home run and Mazie Jurek’s RBI walk.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Cubs added to their early lead on a Honer two-run triple, an Ella Johnson RBI double, and an Elaina Fink RBI single.
Four more Cubs runs crossed the plate in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 12-1. Sami Winter hit a solo home run to left field and Honer an RBI double, and Fink recorded an RBI walk and Jurek an RBI single.
Maus earned the win for the Cubs. The hurler surrendered two hits and one run over five innings, striking out nine and walking seven.
As a team, the Cubs tallied 13 hits. Fink and Baylie Winter each collected multiple hits. The Cubs had a strong eye at the plate, piling up seven walks for the game.
Honer, Fischer, Fink, Winter, and Johnson each stole multiple bases. As a team, the Cubs stole 13 bases. The Cubs were sure-handed in the field and didn’t commit a single error.
