Paynesville (Game one)
Claire Maus struck out 10 batters as the hurler led the Cubs’ softball team past Paynesville 12-1 in the first game of a neutral site doubleheader at River’s Edge Softball Complex in Waite Park on May 1. Maus surrendered four hits and one run over five innings while walking two.
Sami Winter collected three hits in three at bats in the win. Winter tripled in the first inning, doubled in the fifth inning, and singled in the second inning.
The Cubs got on the board in the top of the first inning after Maus singled down the right field line, Winter tripled down the right field line, and Lilliah Krippner singled to right field, each driving in one run.
In the top of the second inning, the Cubs added to their early lead after Paynesville committed an error, and Krippner grounded out, each scoring one run. The Cubs scored two more runs in the third after Elaina Fink singled to right field.
The Cubs tallied 13 hits in the game. Fink led the Cubs with three runs batted in. The infielder went one-for-three on the day. Maus, Baylie Winter, Krippner, and Ella Johnson each collected multiple hits for the Cubs. The team ran wild on the base paths, piling up six stolen bases for the game.
Paynesville (Game two)
The Cubs were victorious against Paynesville 4-0 in game two of the doubleheader.
In the bottom of the first, the Cubs opened the scoring thanks to two singles. The team first got on the board when Claire Maus singled, scoring one run.
The Cubs extended their early lead with two runs in the bottom of the third thanks to RBI singles by Sami Winter and Lilliah Krippner.
Riley Fischer earned the win for the Cubs. The hurler gave up three hits and zero runs over seven innings, striking out nine and walking one.
Winter and Krippner were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected two hits for the Cubs. Krippner led the Cubs with two runs batted in. The third baseman went two-for-three on the day.
