The Kimball Cubs varsity football team ran into a tough and well-disciplined Pioneer team last Friday night, Sept. 11, in Pierz. From the opening kick off, it was apparent that the young Cubs had difficulty responding to the relentless attack, play after play, as the Pioneers went on to a 62 – 0 victory. A definite valley after a fun home opener verses St. Johns, but hopefully a learning opportunity as these young Cubs continue to try and build a successful 2009 season.
The offense struggled and gained only 38 yards on the ground and 46 yards in the air as a team. There were opportunities to sustain drives and maybe even provide a spark, but either because of the weather and/or lack of concentration, those opportunities slipped through their fingertips.
Defensively, the Cubs were led by Travis Schiefelbein, Austin Ruehle, and Travis Wills with 7 tackles each. Captain Tyler Loch followed with 6 tackles. This was by far the most physical competition the Cubs faced this season and it was apparent that Kimball was not ready mentally or physically to compete with Pierz.
The Cubs are now 1 – 1 overall and 0 – 1 in conference play. Back to the drawing board, as Kimball picks up the pieces and shows the character of each individual as they get ready to face Maple Lake in Maple Lake this Friday night at 7 p.m. Sept. 18.
GO CUBS!
