Cubs?Äô volleyball team fights hard, loses playoff battle Oct. 29

All things considered, the Lady Cubs had a very successful 2015 season. Finishing the campaign with a most respectable 17-11 overall record, Kimball upset No. 2-seeded Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg in the Section 5A playoffs Thursday, Oct. 29. Set scores in the 3-1 victory were 25-17, 25-16, 12-25, and 25-19.

?ÄúWe started off with lots of energy in games one and two. In game three, we got down 0-6 right away and just lost any
momentum we had. We were able to pick it up again and finish,?Äù said Coach Tabitha Mortenson. Match highlights included Madi Hurrle with 20 kills, 5 blocks, and 9 digs; Emma Kuechle with 12 kills and Kenzie Leither with 5 kills and 4 blocks. Kari Schiefelbein had 12 digs and Becky Holtz had 36 set assists and 13 digs.

The Cubs advanced to round two and took on the No. 1-seeded Verndale Pirates, on Saturday, Oct. 31. Looking sharp and attacking from all angles, Kimball battled hard but ultimately lost to a very talented Verndale squad, 3-2. Set scores were 22-25, 25-18, 22-25, 25-13, and 15-10. Junior Madison Hurrle pounded down a couple of dozen kills in the Cubs?Äô loss. Junior Emma Kuechle added 18 kills and senior teammate Rebeckah Holtz recorded an amazing 43 set assists for the Lady Cubs.
