Daniel Norman McCain was born Aug. 19, 1936, in Harlan, Iowa, to Walton and Mettie (Christensen) McCain. The family moved to Lake Vermillion when Dan was 2; he grew up on the Iron Range and Duluth. As a teenager, he moved in with his sister and brother-in-law, Marie and Harold, to help on their farm. At the age of 16, Dan went to work in the iron mines, and at 17 he joined the U.S. Army. He honorably served in the Army for three years, then served 11 years in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. Upon his discharge, Dan worked as a maintenance mechanic at a foundry in Minneapolis. Dan was a gifted artist, especially when using a pencil. He loved to travel, and he was able to speak three additional languages – French, German and Turkish. Those around Dan could always rely on him to bail them out when something broke, as he could fix almost anything. He enjoyed hunting, riding and rebuilding motorcycles, and racing of all types. He loved his puppies and, above all else, his family.
Daniel was preceded in death by his ex-wife Joyce Bastin, son Calvin Douglas McCain, and siblings Walton McCain, Marie Wylie, and Calvin McCain.
He is survived by his children Debbie (and Russell) Koehler of Dassel, and Keith (and Patty) McCain of Kingston; grandchildren David (and Theresa) Koehler, Tim Koehler (and Gabriel Valdez), Calla (and Terry) Freiz, Sam Koehler (and Sadie Yasger), Emma (and Colten) Burghuis, Daniel (and Kristyn) McCain, and Andrea McCain; great-grandchildren Evelyn, Lilly, George, Kayden, Grayson, Easton, and Ryker; and other family members and friends.
Arrangements are entrusted to Dingmann Funeral Care Burial & Cremation Services of Kimball.
