David Mertens died at his St. Cloud home Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2018. He was 67.
A celebration of David’s life will be held from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, at the Willow Creek Park in Kimball.
David Ray Mertens was born Oct. 15, 1950, in St. Cloud to Henry and Dorothy (Clement) Mertens. David was raised on the family homestead in Kimball. He attended Kimball schools and was a member of the Class of 1968. After high school, David began his career as a carpenter working various carpentry jobs. In his spare time he enjoyed being in the outdoors, whether that be hunting, fishing, or just spending time in nature. In recent years he took an interest in watching television and was particularly fond of John Wayne shows. David was a lifelong reader, and could often remember the fine details of the books he read. Above all, David cherished the time he was able to spend with his family.
David was preceded in death by his parents, brothers James, John, and Charles, and infant siblings Carol and Louis.
He is survived by his children Nichol (and John) Mertens-Maxson of Blaine, Andrea Dragan of St. Augusta, and Nathan (and Alyssa) Mertens of Kimball; nine grandchildren Anita, Anika, Chloe, Piper, Henry, Shania, Brooke, Amber, and Hazel; siblings Joan (and Edmund) Theisen of Perham, Jean (and DuWayne) Orbeck of Kimball, Lona Nathe of St. Cloud, Cherry (and John) Hengel of St. Cloud, Roxanne (and David) Donnay of St. Cloud, Debra (and Steven) Vossen of Kimball, Patrick (and Lynda) of Fairhaven, Paul of Akeley, and Ramona (and Mike) Olk of Kimball; sister-in-law Judi Mertens of St. Cloud; and numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
