DFL annual chili contest

·

Although 2003 is not an election year, political battles have taken on a distinctly hard edge, notes longtime DFL activist and Dassel resident Nancy Larson. She’s thinking about the Third Annual Meeker County DFL Chili Cook-off, a hotly contested, yearly fundraiser that will take place from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, at the Darwin Rod & Gun Club on Highway 12. Special guests include Attorney General Mike Hatch who will assist in judging the contest. Meeker County DFL Chair Pat Hanson hopes the efforts of the cooks fire up passions and energy for next year’s electoral battles. The chili chefs will compete in four categories: Mule-kick Hot, Bipartisan Mild, Progressive Vegetarian, and Specialty (Not Special Interest). Grand Champion honors go to the chili judged best from all categories. Anyone may enter a batch of chili at no charge. Suggested admission contribution is $15. Pop, beer and wine are available for purchase; chili fixings, brats for the faint of heart, dessert bars, and Tums will be supplied free. An auction of unusual political collectibles, interesting items and homemade goodies will follow the chili tasting. For more information, call Nancy Larson at (320) 275-3705.
