The Eagles girls’ basketball hit the road for a match-up with the Litchfield Dragons, attempting to halt their eight-game -losing streak. The Eagles fell into a 28-18 halftime deficit and, thanks to an evenly played second half, couldn’t rally back in an eventual 59-48 section road loss Thursday, Feb. 13, extending the team’s losing streak to a season-long nine games.
Both teams shot at lower shooting percentages, but the -Dragons made just a couple more shots and got to the free-throw line more often.
The Eagles shot 26% from the floor, compared to 34% for the Dragons. As for the free-throw line, the Eagles finished 7 of 15 (47%) at the charity stripe, compared to the Dragons’ 13 of 26 (50%) performance.
Defensively, the Eagles forced the Dragons into 23 turnovers, while committing just 12 on the offensive end. The Eagles did lose the rebounding battle by nearly a two to one margin, out-rebounded 50-27.
Ava Vanderbeek led the Eagles with 17 points. Grace Brovold also hit double figures with 10 points, along with a team-high six rebounds.
Holdingford
Behind a strong defensive effort, the Eagles brought an end to their season-long nine-game losing streak with a 50-42 conference road victory Thursday, Feb. 13, over the Holdingford Huskers, a team that came into this game with a 14-9 record.
Earlier this season, the Eagles fell to the Huskers at home by a 59-40 final back on Jan. 10.
The 42 points the Eagles allowed in the teams’ second meeting tied for the fourth-lowest amount of points an opponent has scored against the Eagles this season.
With the win, the Eagles improved to 4-21 overall and 3-10 in Central Minnesota Conference play.
Next action
After hosting Maple Lake on Feb. 18 to conclude their regular season, the Eagles will shift their focus to the Section 3AA girls’ basketball tournament set to begin Friday, Feb. 21.
