Eagles cap 2-1 week with tight loss

Moehrle joins 1,000-point club

The Eagles boys’ basketball team had several reasons to celebrate during its Tuesday, Jan. 14, conference home game versus the Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City Falcons. Before the final buzzer sounded,  senior Wyatt Moehrle became the 15th member of the Eden Valley-Watkins Boys’ Basketball 1,000-Point Club. Then, when the final buzzer sounded, the Eagles came away with the 62-48 win.

Leading 32-28 at halftime, the Eagles pulled away in the second half. 

For the game, the Eagles shot 38% from the floor, but defensively held the Falcons to just 28% shooting, including 11% from three-point range. The Eagles also got to the free-throw line often, finishing 18 of 27 (66%) from the charity stripe.

Blake Glenz led the Eagles with 20 points. On his milestone night, Moehrle finished with a double-double performance of 16 points and 11 rebounds. Lee Dziengel and Caleb DeRose each chipped in 10 points to also pace the Eagles.

New London-Spicer

The Eagles experienced some offensive struggles, shooting just 28% from the floor, but leaned into its defense to earn the 49-39 section home win over the New London-Spicer Wildcats Thursday, Jan. 16. 

The Eagles took a 31-15 lead going into halftime – an edge that proved more than enough. Despite its shooting struggles, the Eagles held the Wildcats to just 23% shooting, including 11% from three-point range.

Wyatt Moehrle led the Eagles, posting another double-double performance with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Riley Geislinger posted 10 points to also pace the Eagles.

Kimball

The Eagles and Kimball Cubs traded punches throughout the game. In the second half, the Cubs built its lead to 11 on three occasions, but the Eagles kept rallying back.

With 20 seconds remaining, the Cubs led 49-46. The Eagles then sunk a three to tie the game at 49-49. On the ensuing possession, the Cubs delivered the final punch on a couple of free throws with three seconds left. 

The Eagles missed a shot at the buzzer and fell by a 51-49 final in a conference road game Friday,
Jan. 17.

The two teams also traded punches in the first half. The Eagles jumped to a 5-0 lead before the Cubs answered with a 11-2 run to grab an 11-7 edge. The Cubs extended its lead to 12 points, at 26-14, with just under four minutes remaining in the half. The Eagles responded with a 10-2 run to end the half, cutting the Cubs’ halftime lead to four, at 28-24.

Wyatt Moehrle again led the Eagles with 20 points, falling two rebounds shy of another double-
double. Riley Geislinger scored 14 points to also lead the Eagles.

This loss would snap the Eagles’ season-high three-game winning streak. The team holds a 5-7 overall record, and a 3-3 record in Central Minnesota Conference play.

Next action

After hitting the road to play Albany on Jan. 21, the Eagles head to Holdingford Thursday, Jan. 23, and end the week with a home game versus Minnewaska Friday, Jan. 24. The following week, the team remains home for two more games – versus Redwood Valley on Monday, Jan. 27, and Royalton Tuesday, Jan. 28.
