The Eagle wrestling team made the trip south to Le Sueur–Henderson on Tuesday, Jan. 21, for a pair of duals versus St. Clair-Mankato Loyola and the host,
Le Sueur-Henderson, a team listed in the “Lean and Mean” portion of The Guillotine’s Class A state team rankings, and the defending Section 4A Champions.
The Eagles left the event with a 1-1 mark, earning a 48-30 win over St. Clair and falling to Le Sueur-Henderson 29-45.
St. Clair
In the win over St. Clair-Mankato Loyola, only four matches actually took place, all ending in pin. The Eagles earned three of those four pins, including Brody Sieben (114), Brayden Kramer (139), and Treyce Ludwig (189).
Kramer’s pin in this dual marked the fiftieth pin of his career. It came with 39 seconds left in the third period over Ty Rommes.
Torii Berg (121), Ricky Vaquera Valencia (145), Eli Hernandez (172), Mitchell Lipinski (215), and Nick Becker (285) all won by forfeit for the Eagles. As a team, the Eagles earned wins in eight of the 13 matches.
The team fell by forfeit in four matches (107, 127, 133, and 152). The Eagles’ Carter Scheeler (160) fell by pin 25 seconds into the third period versus Chase Bade ranked eighth at Class A 160 pounds – to account for the team’s other loss.
Le Sueur-Henderson
Facing a Le Sueur–Henderson team that ended its dual season in the section team semifinals last season by a 39-31 final, the Eagles fell into an early hole in this match-up that it could not recover from, dropping seven of the first eight matches in the 16-point loss.
In the dual, the Eagles won five matches, including three by pin and one by forfeit. Zachary Heinen (127), Carter Scheeler (160), and Nick Becker – ranked eighth at Class A 285 pounds – earned the team’s three pins, and Eli Hernandez (172) recorded the forfeit victory.
Treyce Ludwig (189) earned the team’s other win – a 20-4 technical fall victory.
Of the team’s eight losses, four came by pin (114, 121, 145, and 215) and three by forfeit (107, 133, and 152). Notably, the Eagles’ -Mitchell Lipinski (215) fell by pin at the 1:29 mark to one of two ranked Le Sueur-Henderson wrestlers, third-ranked George Doherty.
The other Eagle defeat came via a 4-2 loss for Brayden Kramer (139) to Le Sueur-Henderson’s Waylon Thieke.
