Eagles swept by Royals, drop to 8-7
·
Game one
The Eagles tied the Royalton Royals at 1-1 in the top of the second inning after Jackson Portner crossed home plate on a passed ball.
That’s all the offense the Eagles could muster the rest of the way, leaving five runners on base over the final five innings. Meanwhile, the Royals took the lead for good with two runs in the second, and added on, sending the Eagles to a 5-1 loss in game one of a road -doubleheader on May 8.
After scoring two runs in the second, the Royals tacked on a run in the fourth and another in the sixth to provide for the final margin.
Following that second-inning run, the Eagles’ biggest scoring threat came in the fifth when the team stranded runners at second and third while trailing 4-1 at that point.
Offensively, they finished with just one hit – by Max Geislinger in the seventh inning. Geislinger’s hit broke up the Royals’ combined no-hitter with two outs in that final inning. The Eagles did reach base via walk eight times, but stranded seven runners on for the game.
Coltant Harff took the loss on the pitching rubber, giving up five runs, three earned, on nine hits, one walk, and one hit batter over six innings.
Game two
A Carter Scheeler RBI double and Blake Glenz RBI sacrifice fly in the second, and a Lee Dziengel RBI sacrifice fly in the third gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead after three innings. This lead disappeared after the Royals posted a five-run fourth inning. The Eagles didn’t respond in an eventual 8-3 loss in game two of the road doubleheader.
In this five-run Royals’ fourth-inning, the team came to the plate 11 times and posted five hits. The Royals added on with three runs in the sixth, providing for the final margin.
Offensively, the Eagles finished with six hits. Bryce Neiman, Coltant Harff, Riley Geislinger, Eli Hernandez, Scheeler, and Glenz each contributed one hit.
G. Schmitt took the pitching loss, giving up five runs on six hits, four walks, and one hit batter, and striking out one over three and two-thirds innings.
