The Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted Lakers visited the Cubs last Tuesday, May 9, in an eighth-grade baseball game. The Lakers jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after one inning. They continued to add to their total throughout the game, until the Cubs broke through in the last two innings. The Cubs fell by a 14-3 score.
Carter Lyrek started on the hill for the Cubs. He pitched very well and was around the plate all day. Carter?Äôs totals were: four innings pitched, 12 hits, 12 runs (eight earned), one strikeout and three walks. Alan Schmidt finished the game pitching the final two innings. He gave up two runs (both unearned) on one hit, walked one and struck out two.
At the plate, the Cubs collected four hits. Greg Antigua had a double and a run batted in. Schmidt had a base hit with two runs batted in, and Austin Donnay and Zack Holtz had the other Cub hits. The Cubs had four walks and struck out 13 times.
