Elsie Hickle, 92

Elsie Cleveland Hickle, formerly of South Haven, died on Saturday, May 18, 2002, at Hilltop Care Center in Watkins where she had been a resident for the past year. She was 92 years old.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Annandale with Rev. David Doppenberg officiating. Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery in Annandale. Friends called from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Elsie was born Nov. 19, 1909, in Kimball to James and Lillie (Driver) Boggs. She married Arthur W. Cleveland on Nov. 9, 1929; he preceded her in death on Sept. 23, 1953. She married James L. Hickle on Dec. 7, 1956; he preceded her in death on Oct. 22, 1972.

Elsie was a homemaker and lived most of her life in the South Haven area. She dearly loved her family, and she enjoyed sewing and gardening.

Elsie was preceded in death by her two husbands, an infant daughter, son Gayle Cleveland, daughter Mary Jane Gutknecht, grandson Ryan Laney, and two sisters, Myrtle Wentland and Mildred Boggs.

She is survived by her sons James (and Susie) Cleveland of South Haven, and William Cleveland of South Haven; 10 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

Pallbearers were Tom and Jason Cleveland, Curtis and Wayne Zoller, Mark Gutknecht, and John Caird. Music was provided by organist Orma Lou Jacobsma and soloist Bev Sorensen.

Arrangements were by Dingmann Funeral Care of Annandale.
