EV-W-K takes second in relay meet

·

The Maple Lake Relays, Thursday, April 26, was a fun meet in which the tracksters can run in events that are not their normal events, since the meet is entirely made up of relays. Now, there are some events in which it would be difficult to hand off a baton to the next teammate, so in that case, each individual would perform, and then their best performance would be combined with two other teammates participating in the same event. Together their performances would be compared to three teammates from another team to determine which teams finished in first through eighth place. For example, in the long jump, three long jumpers would jump one at a time like they would in any other meet. The best mark for each would be added together and the longest distance would win. All field events were handled in this manner. The hurdle races and the one mile were run individually as well, with their times combined and the lowest time would win in those races.

There were so many relays involved like the good old 200, 200, 400, 800 medlay relay makes an appearance once again. This medlay used to be part of the regular schedule of events for every high school varsity meet for the boys. Maple Lake also included a couple of shorter sprint medlays, 4 x 1200, 4 x 100 relay for the shot and disc people and all the relays we usually run in a meet had to be run girl-boy-girl-boy. So you can see what I mean how this is a fun meet for the kids, and a break at our midway point of our season. Oh yeah, there is an exhibition race as well, the coach’s 4 x 100! This is run last and totally for the kid’s entertainment purposes.

This meet, in particular, really emphasizes our philosophy that the team comes before the individual. Therefore, I am not going to give a huge list of the names and combinations of our athletes for this meet. The team scores which is compiled of all scores of all performances for the boys and the girls for nine teams landed EV-W-K

in second place behind Maple Lake, and we received a team trophy for this accomplishment!

One individual relay I do want to mention was the boys 100, 100, 200, 400 medlay relay which set the all-time meet record for the meet! The runners involved in this relay were Deshaun James (EV-W), Torey Rohloff (K), Joe James(EV-W),

and Austin Pelkey(EV-W) running in that order. Congratulations fellas! There were some other good and fun-to-watch performances, and I am excited for the second half of our season.

Upcoming meets are B-B-E Tuesday, May 1, at 4 p.m., St. John’s Friday, May 4, at 4:15 p.m., and the Mega Meet Saturday, May 5, in Sauk Rapids at 9:30 a.m.
