Express win one, lose one in playoffs

Rockies tip Express Sunday, 5-2

The regular season has ended for the Central Valley League, and playoffs began this weekend heading toward the Region 11C tournament to be played in Watkins the first two weekends in August.

The Express traveled to Cold Spring Sunday afternoon, July 22, to face the Rockies. Kimball’s Brian Marquardt scored first, in the second inning, but Cold Spring responded with two runs by David Jonas and Jake Hennen in the second. Each team had a run in the fourth, by Ben Johnson and Nick Skluzacek. But the Rockies’ Jonas and Calvin Kalthoff scored two runs in the eighth to seal the game.

Jake Brinker earned the win and Zak Wallner took the loss, each pitched the whole game.

Express skunk the Gussies

In the first playoff game, the St. Augusta Gussies hosted the Kimball Express Saturday afternoon, July 21.

The Express jumped into the game full force, scoring three runs in the first inning (including a home run by Adam Beyer) and another three in the second. The Express would score five more runs, while the Gussies were kept to only 4 hits on the game. The final score was 11-zip.

Ben Johnson earned the win pitching all seven innings, striking out 11 Gussie batters. Zach Laudenbach was tagged with the loss in four innings, with Luke Richardson pitching relief.

Besides Beyer’s home run that plated two others, two RBI were hit each by Scott Marquardt, Jordan Joseph, and Ben Johnson. Austin Ruehle hit a double.

Of the four hits for the Gussies, there was one double and three singles.
