The Kimball Express hosted the St. Augusta Gussies on a perfect Sunday afternoon, May 21. The Express scored two runs in the first inning, and never looked back. The Gussies didn’t score until the seventh, and only managed one run on the day. The final score was 4-1 for the Express.
The first two Express players at-bat – Austin Ruehle and Scott Marquardt – scored the first runs of the game, starting the game at a 2-0 lead. Ruehle would cross the plate again, in the fifth, as would Cade Marquardt. Ruehle led the Express at bat, hitting a double and a pair of singles. Adam Beyer hit a double and a single for 3 RBI. Scott and Brian Marquardt hit a single apiece.
Matt Dingmann earned the win for the Express, hurling 8 innings; he allowed only one run on five hits, walked 2, and struck out 5. Craig Meyer pitched the final inning, limiting the Gussies to a single hit, and striking out 1.
Aaron Fruth is tagged with the loss for the Gussies. He pitched 5 innings, allowing all 4 Express runs on 7 hits, and he walked 2 and struck out 2. Mitch Kurth pitched the final 3 innings, walking 2 and striking out 3 while allowing no Express hits.
James Anderson led the Gussies at bat, with a double and a single. As a team, the Gussies hit 4 additional singles, but they only had the one run for their effort.
The Express will host the Howard Lake Orphans in an exhibition game at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 27. They play at the Watkins Clippers at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 28.
The Gussies will play at 2 p.m. Monday, May 29, at the Clearwater Rivercats in an exhibition game.
