Finifrock to attend Girls’ State

·

The Frederick A. Metcalf American Legion Auxiliary Unit #261 of Kimball has selected Nicole Finifrock to attend the 56th Annual Minnesota Girls’ State June 9-15 at Bethel College in St. Paul.

Nicole is the daughter of Joel and Katy Finifrock of Kimball.

Sarah Walker has been selected as alternate candidate. Sarah is the daughter of Nancy Schreiner of South Haven and Frank Walker of Gilman, Minn.

Both girls have just completed their junior year at Kimball Area High School.

Minnesota Girls’ State, an American Legion Auxiliary program, is a practical application of Americanism and good citizenship. The purposes of the Girls’ State program are to provide citizenship training for girls of high school age; to afford them an opportunity to live together as self-governing citizens; to inform them about the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of American citizenship, in order that they may understand and participate in the functioning of their government; and to help them grasp the meaning of some of the responsibilities which they must assume when they become adults.

The Constitution and the Statutes of the State of Minnesota are the patterns from which the fundamental laws of Minnesota Girls’ State have been developed. The participants learn government by “living” it, in mythical cities, counties and state. By carrying out the processes of government they learn, by doing, of both the privileges and duties of citizenship, and are encouraged to become leaders of the future.

The entire program is a non-political, non-partisan, non-sectarian attempt to instill in these potential leaders a love of God and country.

The Minnesota Girls’ State program is sponsored by the Minnesota American Legion Auxiliary. Every girl for whom application is made to Girls’ State “must be sponsored by an American Legion Auxiliary Unit.” The American Legion Auxiliary Unit is responsible to participate in the selection process and for the final approval of the candidate sent.

Girls’ State co-chairmen for Kimball Unit #261 are Dori Hamilton and LuAnn Marschel.
